Iranian Scenarios

Iranian Scenarios

The discussion, which took place in the House of Lords, looked at practical problems that might arise in the Gulf, in particualr Iran, that could affect energy supplies, aviation, financial markets and investment decisions and suchlike.

The meeting was hosted by Lord Howell, a former energy minister who co-chairs the Windsor Energy Group. Michael Ancram chaired the discussions in his capacity as head of the Gulf Policy Forum and also as head of the Global Strategy Forum that is run by his former chief of staff.

Iranian Possibilities Study

A new report, ‘Iran Possibilities Study’, has been produced by the Gulf Policy Forum (GPF) on the possible outcomes of the current Iranian situation. The study provides a tailed analysis of where interested parties stand in relation to possible actions and reactions involving Iran and their impact on both a regional and global scale.

The issues addressed in the report are as follows:

·                  Iran: who’s really in charge and is there a long-term game

·                  US: the changing political balance and military options explored

·                  UN: end of the road or new direction?

·                  EU: what options are left to the EU and the E3 group

·                  Israel: domestic political turmoil and unsettled business with Hamas and Hezbollah

·                  Gulf states: fear of a regional big brother

·                  Turkey: a major regional power to engage or confront Iran

·                  Russia: balancing arms and energy interests

·                  China: a difficult balance between energy imports and nuclear spread

·                  Syria: bilateral commitments versus need for more international friends.

·                  Iraq: Iran’s intentions and the implications of a military strike

·                  Financial markets: who will be the winners and losers of any military action.
