Background

Background

London is a global media centre with the greatest concentration of Arab media. Well-informed and accurate coverage of developments in the Arab and Islamic worlds are vital in today’s climate of concern and anxiety. Equally vital is a balanced assessment how the Arab world views the non-Arab world. AIM is non-partisan and apolitical.

Objectives

AIM’s objective is to develop closer links between the media in the Arab and the non-Arab world. The group seeks to do so by developing a better understanding of issues among those involved in the media. This includes developing a greater shared awareness of the constraints and culture within which the international media operates...

Future

This immediate programme will be developed to include some or all of the following:

-         Creating a who’s who guide to journalists covering the Arab world

-         Producing practical guides for journalists on various aspects of the Arab world, such as Islamic beliefs, Islamic sects, Islam and women, Islamic finance, Islamic science

-         Holding regular round-table discussions on issues of the day

-         Developing a pool of specialist media commentators and background advisers to assist journalists in researching stories

-         Organising media facility visits to the Arab world

-         Encouraging production of media coverage of contemporary matters

-         Training journalists on practical issues relating to the Arab world

-         Staging an annual gathering of the media to review developments in the Arab world

AIM Team

AIM is led by Ghayth Armanazi, the former Arab League ambassador to London.

Lord Thomson of Monifeith, a former British Foreign Minister & European Commissioner, chairs the patrons of AIM.

Oliver Miles, the former British ambassador to Libya, Greece & Luxembourg, is on the board.

The strength of AIM is its ability to bring decades of high-level diplomatic experience to these issues. We have the credentials to conduct this project because AIM is a unique programme developed by MEC International with a strong network of consultants to draw upon.
