AIM Projects

The last meeting of the AIM Network was the workshop "Shooting the Messenger - Journalists at Peril in the Middle East", supported by the A.M. Qattan Foundation at Wednesday, 23rd July 2003 in the Foreign Press Association, London.

Summary

Scores of journalists have died since 9/11 covering the trouble spots of the Middle East. Conflict journalism has always been a risk but the media has suffered greater casualties in recent months than ever before.  The Arab International Media Forum is therefore holding a discussion briefing to bring those concerned with reporting the news and commissioning international news reports to review with the relevant authorities and international agencies how best to address the issue.  This gathering, “Shooting the Messenger,” will be held at the Foreign Press Association, 11 Carlton House, London.

Issues

The issues that will be reviewed at the round table will include:

  • The circumstances in which journalists have died or been injured and what steps might have been taken to save their lives.
  • Foreign correspondents will be asked to give their views on how the current position has changed since 9/11.
The meeting will include an assessment of current guidelines for international media and suggested possible improvements in light of recent developments.
  • International agencies will be asked to give their advice on best practice for journalists in Middle East.
  • Governments from the region will be asked to contribute to the discussion with a view to developing an agreed code of practice for both the media and relevant governments.
